Siri Powered by Gemini and What Apple Revealed at WWDC
Apple has rebuilt Siri and Google supplies the engine. The changes are big, the deal is expensive and users in France will have to wait for it.

01Five key points
- At WWDC 2026 on June 8, Apple unveiled Siri AI, its biggest overhaul of the assistant since 2011.
- The engine runs on a custom Gemini model built with Google, with about 1.2 trillion parameters.
- The deal costs Apple about $1 billion a year and was made official on January 12, 2026.
- Requests go through Private Cloud Compute, which strips identifying data before anything reaches Gemini.
- It launches first in English in the United States later in 2026. The European Union and China are left out at the start.
0202What Apple announced
Siri AI becomes a conversational assistant. It keeps track of a conversation, chains several actions across apps and gets its own app, with conversations synced between your devices through iCloud. It reads your personal context, such as messages, emails and photos, to answer you. Web search, image generation, content summaries, coding help and file analysis come on top.
The rollout is planned for iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27, as an option you turn on. On stage, Apple stressed one point above the rest. The assistant now acts on your behalf instead of only answering your questions.
0303Google, the custom model and the price
Apple pays about $1 billion a year for a Gemini model built specifically for Siri and Apple Intelligence, with about 1.2 trillion parameters. That is far bigger than anything Apple has trained in-house. The two companies made the agreement official in a joint statement on January 12, 2026.
0404Is Siri AI just Gemini with a new badge?
The honest answer sits somewhere between yes and no. The heavy engine does come from Gemini. Apple, though, talks about its Apple Foundation Models built with Google, keeps control of the experience and routes requests through its own infrastructure. Put simply, Google supplies the power while the packaging and the rules stay Apple's.
0505How it works, in three levels
Siri AI routes each request according to how hard it is. The split aims for a balance between speed, cost and privacy. Simple jobs stay close to you on the device, while the heaviest ones travel all the way to Google's data centers.
- On the device. Simple tasks stay local, on Apple's in-house models and the chip's neural engine.
- Private Cloud Compute. Mid-level requests go through Apple's private servers.
- Google Cloud. The heaviest requests go to Google, on Nvidia Blackwell B200 GPUs.
0606Privacy is where trust is won or lost
Before a complex request reaches Gemini, it passes through Private Cloud Compute. There, Apple removes the data that identifies you, such as your identity, your Apple ID and your location history. Apple says Google never receives that information, processing is stateless and nothing is stored. The contract also bars Google from training future Gemini models on Apple users' data. On paper, the setup is solid. The first independent audits will show whether practice matches it.
0707When it ships and why France has to wait
Siri AI comes out first in English, as a public beta, later this year in the United States. The European Union and China are left out at the start. For users in France, that means two hurdles on day one, the language and availability. Watch the updates for French language support, because that is the real sign of a local launch.
0808The catch
Several reports on the demos point to noticeable latency on complex tasks. That makes sense when a request has to travel all the way to Google's cloud and back. Apple will have to prove the assistant is fast in real use, not just convincing on stage. The other big issue is dependence. Apple, long a champion of in-house AI, now relies on a direct competitor for its flagship feature.
For you, it comes down to a trade-off. You have to decide whether a Siri that can finally act is worth handing more personal context, even after Private Cloud Compute has cleaned it. The things to watch are the beta date, French language support and the first independent tests on speed and privacy.
Google supplies the power. The packaging and the rules stay Apple's.
0909Frequently asked questions
Is Siri AI available in France?
Not at launch. It comes out first in English, as a beta in the United States later in 2026. The European Union and China are left out at the start. French will come later, through software updates.
What is the deal between Apple and Google?
Apple pays about $1 billion a year for a custom Gemini model with about 1.2 trillion parameters. The two companies made the deal official on January 12, 2026, in a joint statement.
Does my data go to Google?
According to Apple, Private Cloud Compute strips identifying data before the request reaches Gemini. Nothing is stored afterward. The contract also bars Google from training its models on that data.
Does Siri AI really replace the old Siri?
Yes, it is a full overhaul. The assistant becomes conversational and can take actions across apps. The old Siri was limited to simple commands, so the jump is a big one for everyday use.
