Perplexity API key (Sonar) without a Pro account

Perplexity's Sonar models answer by citing the web, which is rare and useful for time-sensitive content. The key needs no Pro subscription despite what older tutorials claim, while billing adds a search fee per request to the tokens.

A Perplexity API key connects your tools to an unusual kind of AI. Its Sonar models search the web live and answer with citations, so each claim comes with a source you can open. You create the key on console.perplexity.ai and pay per use. Many tutorials still say otherwise, yet the key requires no Pro subscription. The official pricing page states it in plain words.

Getting from a free account to a working key takes three steps, all on the same portal. The prices quoted here come straight from the official page, recorded on October 16, 2026. Sonar also has a double billing that most tutorials skip, with tokens on one side and a search fee per request on the other. Once you see both lines, you can decide whether this tool deserves a place in your kit.

01Key takeaways

  • Perplexity's distinctive trait is answers backed by a live web search, with citations, where other models answer from memory.
  • You create the key on console.perplexity.ai, in the API Keys tab, after adding a payment method. It starts with the prefix pplx-.
  • No Pro subscription is required. Official pricing is pay per use, with no plan to sign up for.
  • Sonar bills two things, the tokens of the text and a search fee per request. Both stay tiny at individual scale.
  • The API speaks the market's standard format, Bearer token included, so the key plugs into compatible tools.

02An AI that cites its sources, the Sonar difference

Classic large models answer from their training. They shine on style and reasoning but know nothing about what happened yesterday. Perplexity's Sonar models flip the priority. Each request triggers a web search, the answer is built on the pages found and it arrives with its citations. For a news article, a price comparison or a monitoring task, the difference is obvious from the first answer.

In the main guide to AI without a subscription, this key takes the researcher's seat. It doesn't replace the writer who does the heavy drafting. It feeds that writer fresh facts you can verify. Many setups pair it with a general-purpose model, for example the one described in the OpenAI key walkthrough. Sonar gathers the sourced facts and the other model writes.

03No Pro subscription needed, according to the official pricing

This is the most muddled point online. Plenty of tutorials, French-language ones included, claim you need a Perplexity Pro account to get the official key. The current documentation says the opposite, with pay-per-use pricing for all APIs and no subscription. A free account plus a payment method for credits is all it takes.

The Pro plan is still Perplexity's consumer product, meaning its web answer engine and the mobile app. The API lives its own life next to it, with its own portal and its own billing. The confusion comes from old access conditions that have since been dropped. If a tutorial makes you buy Pro before the key, it's out of date, so trust the portal instead.

04Step 1, open the developer portal

Go to console.perplexity.ai, the API portal. You sign in with your regular Perplexity account. If you don't have one, signing up by email takes two minutes. The portal brings together key management, billing, usage tracking and documentation. Like almost every provider's portal, it's in English.

A first look around pays off. The pricing page details every model. Later on, the usage page will show you request by request where your credits go. This open meter is one of the good sides of the platform. No spending stays anonymous, since every call shows up in the statement.

05Step 2, add a payment method

As with xAI or OpenAI, the API only works with credits. You have to go through the billing tab with a bank card and load an amount of your choice. A few dollars cover weeks of experiments, as the price table further down shows. While you're there, set a spending limit, because that safeguard is the first way to keep pay-per-use billing under control.

If having no card at all is your starting condition, this provider isn't the right candidate. The providers you can test without a credit card cover the free tiers on the market. You can start at zero euros there and come back here later for sourced research.

06Step 3, generate the pplx- key

  1. Open the API Keys tab of the console.perplexity.ai portal.
  2. Click the create button and name the key after the tool that will use it.
  3. Copy the displayed key right away. It has the format pplx-… and won't be shown again.
  4. Paste it into the target tool, then close the tab.

The routine is the same everywhere. A lost key gets revoked and recreated in two clicks. One key per tool keeps your key ring readable. The full set of habits fits in the guide to protecting your keys from day one, a five-minute read that applies to every provider.

07Sonar models and prices, tokens plus search fees

Perplexity's price list has a feature most guides forget. Each Sonar request combines the token price with a search fee billed per thousand requests, which varies with the search depth you ask for. The official figures for the main models, recorded on October 16, 2026, are in the table.

Perplexity API prices recorded on October 16, 2026, tokens per million and search per 1,000 requests
ModelInputOutputSearch fee
Sonar$1$1$5 to $12
Sonar Pro$3$15$6 to $14
Sonar Reasoning Pro$2$8$6 to $14

In real work, a documented 1,000-word answer on Sonar weighs about 1,700 output tokens, which is a sixth of a cent. The search fee adds between half a cent and a little over one cent. The total stays under two cents per sourced request. A full daily monitoring routine costs a few dozen cents a month. Only massive use inside an application makes the search fees really count.

Perplexity also offers a deep research model billed separately, plus a Search API at $5 per 1,000 requests that returns raw results without writing anything. These are specialist tools that go beyond producing content with a key. They sit on the same official pricing page, next to the Sonar models.

08What the key changes for your content

Time-sensitive content is the obvious use. Price comparisons, news articles and pages that quote recent figures all need the facts of the day. Sonar supplies them with their sources and you handle the formatting. Verification is another. Before you publish, a check pass on sensitive claims costs two cents and spares you public corrections.

Monitoring rounds out the list. A recurring question asked every morning about your industry costs less than one coffee a month. It feeds newsletters, social posts or simply your grasp of the topic. If you'd rather pool providers, the Sonar models also appear in the catalogs of multi-provider hubs. The OpenRouter hub route serves them with a single key, in exchange for a fee on credit purchases.

09Three traps to avoid with a Sonar key

The first trap is handing pure writing to Sonar. The model runs a search on every request, so you pay search fees even when your request doesn't need one. Rephrasing a paragraph or writing variations of a title is a job for a classic general-purpose model, which also costs less. Keep Sonar for questions that call for facts from the web.

The second trap is confusing Sonar with the Search API. Sonar writes a sourced answer, while the Search API returns raw search results that you process yourself. Tutorials often mix the two up. Check which product your source is talking about before you compare prices that don't describe the same thing.

The third trap is ignoring search depth. The fee per request can more than double depending on the level you request. The default setting is almost always enough. Before you scale up a use case, take the time to learn how to price a request. Ten minutes of math on paper will spare you nasty surprises at the end of the month.

10Pasting the key into OpenTahr

All that's left is to plug it in. Take a minute to open a free OpenTahr account, then paste your Perplexity API key in the settings. It stays in your browser and never reaches our servers. The tools use it wherever you select it. The tool is free during the beta, its future paid plans are flat fees and you pay the provider's cost price for AI with no hidden margin on each action, so volume works in your favor.

A researcher works better as part of a team. The full set of key guides helps you build your key ring, with a general-purpose model for writing, Sonar for sourcing and a budget model for everyday tasks. That way each task lands on the model that suits it.

11Frequently asked questions

Is the Perplexity API free?

It isn't. It's billed per use, tokens plus search fees, after you load credits with a payment method. The amounts stay tiny for individual use. A sourced request stays under two cents on the base Sonar model. The official price list details every model.

Do you need a Perplexity Pro account to get the key?

You don't. The official documentation states pay-per-use pricing for all APIs, with no subscription. A free account and a payment method are enough on the console.perplexity.ai portal. Tutorials that require Pro describe old conditions that no longer apply.

Which models come with the key?

You get the Sonar family. That means the base model for everyday sourced answers, Sonar Pro for more thorough answers, a reasoning variant and a deep research model. The list changes over time. The pricing page in the documentation is the reference for current model names.

How is it different from an OpenAI or Anthropic key?

The difference is the relationship with the web. General-purpose models answer from their training and excel at writing. Sonar searches first, answers second and cites its sources. The two families complement each other more than they compete, with fresh facts on one side and polished writing on the other.

Does the key work in OpenAI-compatible tools?

It does. The API is called with a Bearer token in the market's standard format. The documentation shows examples you can reuse almost as they are. In practice, the pplx- key pastes into any BYOK tool that accepts a compatible provider, exactly like the other keys.

Transparency note. Access conditions, models and prices were verified on October 16, 2026 on Perplexity's official portal and documentation (docs.perplexity.ai). The price list changes and the official page is the reference. Perplexity doesn't pay us.
